The 2019 National Conference on Poverty Alleviation (POVCON) is a gathering of research and extension workers from various organizations specifically the academe, local government units, and organizations geared towards helping end poverty in the Philippines. The organizers believe that poverty can be significantly reduced through research-based decision-making, fact-based project planning, science and technology enhanced program implementation, and socially-grounded policy formulation and implementation.

One major role of the academe is to generate information/knowledge, technology, and skilled and competent graduates. Most of these knowledge-based resources (specifically the researches and its developed technologies) are left unused by the intended clients. Also, the academe is home to experts which are largely untapped by organizations to help them formulate appropriate solutions to societal problems like poverty.

The conference was created in 2017 to serve as a platform for dialogue between agencies who have the direct capacity to respond to the challenges brought about by poverty. The academe and other participants in the conference are expected to share their discoveries and other information derived from their researches. They will also learn how the LGUs and NGOs, and other units (both private and public organizations) are doing to solve poverty. Positive developments or success stories by the LGUs, NGOs, GOs, NGAs, and other organizations in the Philippines in reducing or managing poverty will be presented to educate and inspire participants.

With lessons learned from the 2017PovCon and 2018 iPOVCON, enhancement of the program proceedings and format to make it more effective has been incorporated. This year’s conference focuses on Filipino culture as an important tool to eradicate poverty and to understand its contribution to poverty in the country.

There shall be four major sessions: the Plenary Sessions where all of the participants are in one venue; Two (2) breakout venues; the first is for the participants from the academe (with several sessions for the 7 tracks) and the second is for LGUs where a colloquium with the invited LGU speakers and LGU participants will have ample time to discuss issues in poverty alleviation. An activity for the community leaders shall also be conducted to address cultural issues in poverty at their level. Posters will be available all throughout the event for the participant to view. A short film presentations were also organized to share insights about poverty and sustainable development.
